Located on the eastern side of the city, this is one of the oldest cemeteries in the Muslim world. Dating to the 2nd century AH/ 9th century AD and used until the Mamluk period, this cemetery consists of two sites, on the north and the south. The dry climate contributed to the cemetery’s preservation.
The cemetery has witnessed the first attempt to build domes above mausoleums in Egypt during the Fatimid period. Among the most important buildings in the cemetery, there are the domes of 77 Waly (sheikh), the mausoleum Mashhad of al-Sharif Hassan, the mausoleum Mashhad of al-Sharif Hedra, the mausoleum Mashhad of Abbasa Bnt Khadyj, the mausoleum Mashhad of al-Sada al-Ga’afera, the mausoleum Mashhad of Zainab Bnt al-Hanafyya, and the mausoleum Mashhad of Sayeda Aamna in the southern part.
